More About Westchester County
By 1775, the County of Westchester was the richest and had the largest population in New York. Westchester County was the site of a significant percentage of fighting during the Revolutionary War. The Revolution was often a civil war with families’ loyalties divided between the American Patriots and British sympathizers.
Construction of the Croton Dam and Aqueduct began in 1837 and was completed in 1842. The aqueduct carried water 41 miles from Croton to two Manhattan reservoirs which were then located where the Great Lawn in Central Park and the New York Public Library are presently situated. The Aqueduct is a historic landmark and is recognized as one of the great engineering accomplishments of the 19th century.
Westchester is known for many beautiful mansions which were constructed after the American Civil War, including Lyndhurst in Tarrytown, Kykuit in Pocantico Hills (Property of the Rockefeller family), and Caramoor in Katonah. In Rye, Playland, the first planned amusement park in the U.S opened in 1928. Playland is now a National Historic Landmark.
