Putnam County, New York

Putnam County was formed in 1812 and is in New York’s lower Hudson valley region. Originally, Putnam County was part of Dutchess County. In 2004, the population of the county was approximately 100,000. Putnam County was named for Israel Putnam, a general in the American Revolutionary War and hero of the French and Indian War.

Putnam County has a total area of 246 square miles. The County seat is in Carmel. Over the last few years, the original Putnam County Courthouse has been replaced with a new courthouse although the original remains in place. Putnam is traditionally a “red” county, with most elections going to Republican candidates. However, Eliot Spitzer won the county by a substantial margin over Republican John Faso in 2006. The only Democratic presidents to ever win Putnam County were Woodrow Wilson in 1912 and Lyndon Jonson in 1964.

Putnam County is located in the southeastern part of New York State. It is bordered by the Hudson River on the western boundary and the New York-Connecticut border is on the eastern boundary. There are two main highways in Putnam County: Interstate 84, which connects to 684 by the Connecticut border, and the Taconic Parkway which runs north-south through Central Putnam. The County has 4 school districts, with the largest in the Town of Mahopac.
