Times of Need
Mahopac, New York
Mahopac is a hamlet in the Town of Carmel in Putnam County. It is approximately 5.3 square miles, 47 miles north of New York City. Mahopac was originally inhabited by the Wappinger Native Americans, part of the Algonquin tribe. During the Revolutionary War, Mahopac had an important role as a cross roads for troops in nearby Patterson, Yorktown and West Point.
The hamlet of Mahopac grew after the incorporation of Putnam County in 1812. In the mid 1800’s Mahopac was a popular summer resort. The New York Central Railroad would carry NYC residents to Croton Falls, where they would then be transported to Mahopac by horse drawn carriage. Mahopac became more of a year round location once the Taconic and Saw Mill River parkways were extended.
