Beacon, New York

The City of Beacon is named after the historic beacon fires that were blazing at the summit of Fishkill Mountain to alert the Continental Army to movement of British forces during the Revolutionary War. Beacon was originally settled as Matteran and Fishkill Landing in 1709. Beacon was also a big producer of war supplies, served as a fort, and was a signaling point during the Revolutionary War. The city was incorporated in 1913. From the early 1900’s into the 1970’s, the Mount Beacon Incline Railway was one of the steepest railways in the country at 74% incline to the Mount Beacon Summit. The City of Beacon is 90 miles south of the State capital in Albany.

During the 1800’s, the City of Beacon was a factory town and known as the “Hat Making Capital of the United States”, with almost 500 hat factories. The City suffered a severe economic downturn in the 1960’s and 1970’s, worth the closing of factories, the destruction of historic buildings, and the closure of the Dutchess County Ski area. There was a rebirth in the late 1990’s, which included the development of one of the world’s largest contemporary art museums called Dia: Beacon.

The population of the city as of the 2010 Census is approximately 15,500 citizens. Beacon is 4.9 square miles and sits on the eastern border of the Hudson River. A famous resident of the city is the famed folk singer and environmental activist Pete Seeger, and previously, Digger Phelps, the former head coach of the Notre Dame Basketball team from 1972 through 1991 grew up in the City of Beacon.

The Hudson Valley Renegades, a minor league baseball team affiliated with the Tampa Bay Rays, play their home games at Dutchess County Stadium in nearby Fishkill.

2. Take the first right onto North Ave (377 ft)

3. Continue on to Wolcott Avenue (0.5 mi)

4. then, continue onto Beekman Street, then back onto (0.2 mi)

5. Wolcott Avenue; (1.9 mi)

6. Continue on to New York 9D and continue to follow New York 9D S (9.2 mi)

7. Next, turn left onto NY-403 (2.3 mi)

8. Then, continue onto US-9 South/Albany Post Rd. Continue to follow US-9 South (3.9 mi)

9. At the traffic circle, take the 2nd exit onto US-202 E/US-6 E/US-9 S (0.2 mi)

10. Take the ramp onto US-202 E (0.6 mi)

11. Continue onto US-9 S (8.5 mi)

12. Exit on the left onto New York 9A South toward Briarcliff Manor (5.6 mi)

13. Take the exit for the Taconic State Parkway (2.4 mi)

14. Continue onto the Sprain Brook Pkwy (3.6 mi)

15. Take the exit on the left hand side for I-287 East toward White Plains (2.4 mi)

There is a 5 story parking garage directly behind our building called the Chester-Maple Parking Garage which has plenty of parking. To access this garage, make a right turn onto Maple Avenue at the corner of Mamaroneck Avenue and Maple Avenue and immediately turn right into the garage. Additionally, there are limited short term meter parking spots on Mamaroneck Avenue in front of our building.
