Times of Need
Fishkill, New York
The Town of Fishkill is in the southwest section of Dutchess County. The current population of Fishkill is approximately 31,000 as of the most recent census. The town is 32.59 square miles. Interstate 84 passes through the town, and Route 9 South goes through both the town and the Village of Fishkill. Fishkill gets its’ name from the Dutch expression “vis kill”, which means “fish creek.” The Native Americans called the area “Tioranda”, meaning “the place where two waters meet.”
In 1683, merchants Frances Rombout and Gulian Verplanck bought 85,000 acres in Dutchess County from the Wappinger Indians for goods which included rum, powder and tobacco. They wanted to use the land for fur trading. In the Revolutionary War, Fishkill had a big role as a large military encampment to guard the southern mountain pass. The initial copies of the New York State Constitution were printed in Fishkill in 1777. During the 1800’s, the economy of Fishkill was thriving with mills, factories and skilled weavers, but that ended after the post Civil War depression. In 1931, Texaco bought the old woolen mill site and created a research center. At present, most of the town’s business is technology based, and the factories and mills are a thing of the past.
The Hudson Valley Renegades, a minor league baseball team affiliated with the Tampa Bay Rays, play their home games at the Dutchess County Stadium in Fishkill.
