Nanuet is a hamlet in the Town of Clarkstown in Rockland County. It is 19 miles north of Manhattan, providing residents with suburban living and the convenience of a short drive to the City. Nanuet is approximately 5.5 square miles. It was originally named Nannawitt’s Meadow after the Nannawitt Indians.
The population of Nanuet as of the US Census in 2000 was 16,707. More recently, in 2006, Nanuet’s population was estimated at 18,200. One of the attractions in Nanuet is the Nanuet Mall, with a wide variety of clothing and other retail establishments. In 2007, CNN Money listed Nanuet, New York as 24th on the list of the 100 best places to live in the U.S.
