Times of Need
Stony Point, New York
The town of Stony Point is in Rockland County. The town is triangle shaped and its name comes from its prominent projection into the Hudson River. As of the 2000 Census, there were 14,244 residents of Stony Point. The town is approximately 31.5 square miles and borders Orange County on the west border. During the American Revolution, George Washington used the King’s Ferry in Stony Point to move between the southern colonies and New England. Also of historical significance is the Stony Point Battlefield, where on July 16, 1744, “Mad” Anthony Wayne led 1,350 Army troops in a surprise attack on the British garrison in Stony Point.
Stony Point was founded officially in 1865 and was the last town created in Rockland County. The Palisades Interstate Parkway goes right through the town, so be careful if you are a little heavy on the gas pedal–the State Police issue many tickets in this region!
