Bedford, New York
The town of Bedford is in Westchester County. The population of Bedford as of the 2000 US Census was 18,133. Bedford has a total area of 39.3 square miles. The town of Bedford was founded on December 23, 1680 when 22 Puritans bought a 3 mile tract of land from Chief Katonah and several other Native Americans for coats, cloth and wampum, among other items.
Bedford was briefly a part of Connecticut in 1697. In 1700, King William of England ordered a resolution of the boundary dispute between New York and Connecticut, and Bedford again became a town in the State of New York. Bedford was the county seat in Westchester County during the Revolutionary War. The oldest government building in Westchester is the Bedford Court House in Bedford village, which opened in 1787 and renovated in the 1960s.
Famous residents of Bedford include the clothes designer Joseph Abboud, actor Chevy Chase, musical director Paul Shaffer, and TV personality Martha Stewart.
