Hartsdale, New York
The village of Hartsdale, New York has a population of approximately 10,000 people. Hartsdale is only 20 miles north of New York City and a quick 30 minute train ride on Metro North. The first pet cemetery in the United States opened in Hartsdale in 1896. Hartsdale played a significant role in the Revolutionary War, including the fact that a battle was fought near the site of the Hartsdale train station on October 28, 1776. Further, George Washington met with Comte de Rochambeau, a French general, at the site of the Odell House to form an alliance for the Battle of Yorktown.
You will find several scenic parks in Hartsdale, including the Greenburgh Town Park, which has a large public pool and multiple tennis courts. Hartsdale has several public parks, Secor Woods Park, and Rumbrook, where sports such as tennis, platform tennis and softball are enjoyed by residents from spring through fall. There are two working farms in Hartsdale, both on Secor Road.
Carvel ice cream was born in Hartsdale in 1934 when Greek immigrant Tom Carvelas’ ice cream truck broke down on Memorial Day weekend on Central Avenue in Hartsdale, and Carvelas quickly realized that people were buying and enjoying the soft melted ice cream as much as they were the harder variety—thus, soft serve was discovered!
Hartsdale has been home to famous residents like Henry Jacques Gaisman, founder of the Gillette razor blade; Evangeline Cory Booth, the leader of the Salvation Army; and former President Clinton friend and adviser Vernon Jordan. Buried in Ferncliff Cemetery are Malcolm X, Ed Sullivan, Judy Garland, Oscar Hammerstein, Paul Robeson and Yul Brynner.
