Hastings-on-Hudson, New York
The village of Hastings on Hudson is located along the Hudson River opposite the Palisades Cliffs and is approximately 2.9 square miles. A Dutch carpenter, Frederick Philipse, traded with the Weckquaesgeek Native Americans for the land that is now Dobbs Ferry and Hastings on Hudson in 1682. The Village was incorporated in 1879 and is part of the Town of Greenburgh.
As of the census in 2000, there were approximately 7,700 residents of Hastings on Hudson. Hastings has several public facilities for recreation, such as the Chemka Pool, an outdoor public swimming facility, and Hillside Woods, which offers many hiking and biking trails. Famous residents of Hastings in the past have included actor Frank Morgan (the wizard in the “Wizard Of Oz”), the American photographer Lewis Hine, Broadway impresario Florenz Ziegfield, and presently, TV anchor Keith Olbermann.
