The Town of Mamaroneck was incorporated in 1895, and is approximately 14 square miles. Mamaroneck is a mostly residential community on the Long Island Sound, with an approximate population of 29,000. In early May, the Mamaroneck harbor park is at its absolute best with 150 Japanese cherry trees in bloom.
Mamaroneck is famous for the Winged Foot Golf Club, constructed in 1910. Winged Foot has played host to the 1997 PGA championship, and was the site of the U.S. Open in 1929, 1959, 1974, 1984 and in 2006.
Famous residents of Mamaroneck have included the legendary New York Yankee first baseman, Lou Gehrig, who lived in Mamaroneck while he played for the Yanks in the 1920’s and 1930’s; playwright Edward Albee of “Who’s Afraid Of Virginia Woolf” fame; and the actor brothers Matt and Kevin Dillon.
