The village of Pleasantville, New York has a population of approximately 7,000 people. The village is 31 miles north of Grand Central Terminal in NYC. It was settled in 1695 and named Clark’s Corners until the late 1800’s. Pleasantville was reputedly once a stop on the “Underground Railroad”, a safe house for slaves seeking freedom in Canada.
The village is home to Pace University, and the Jacob Burns Film Center. Jacob Burns is a non-profit theater started in 2001, which offers independent and documentary films and hosts numerous speakers such as filmmaker Oliver Stone, comedian Robert Klein and author Stephen King. Playwright Lillian Hellman made Pleasantville her home in the 1940’s and 1950’s, and more recently, singer Tina Turner and actress Debra Winger have lived in the village.
