Times of Need
Rye, New York
The City of Rye, New York is famous for being the home of the only native born founding father, John Jay. Jay was also the first chief justice of the United States Supreme Court. The mansion where Jay grew up is now a national historic landmark which is Westchester County’s first to have a geothermal heating and cooling system. Another interesting fact about the city is that milestones fixed by Benjamin Franklin on Boston Post Road in 1763 mark 24, 25 and 26 miles from New York City.
The City of Rye is 20 square miles of which 14.2 miles are water. At the last census in 2000, there was a population of almost 15,000. The City is famous as the home of Rye Playland, the amusement park which has one of the oldest wooden roller coasters in the northeast, the “Dragon Coaster”, and where movies such as “Big” and “Fatal Attraction” filmed scenes. Well known residents of Rye are Mike D’Antoni, the head coach of the New York Knicks, Bob Woodruff, the television journalist, and Ralph Branca, the Brooklyn Dodgers pitcher who threw the famous pitch that Bobby Thomson of the New York Giants hit for a home run in the “Shot Heard Around The World” in 1951.
