The Village of Valhalla has approximately 5,300 residents. The village is located in the southeastern section of the Town of Mount Pleasant. Valhalla is known for the Kensico Dam, which was constructed between 1913 and 1917 as an additional source of water for New York City. The Kensico Dam is 1,825 long, and one million cubic feet of masonry was used to build the dam, which is as much as was used to build some of the pyramids by the ancient Egyptians.
Valhalla is also the home of two colleges, Westchester Community College and New York Medical College, and the Westchester Medical Center. There are many cemeteries in Valhalla. Buried in the village are bandleader Tommy Dorsey, entertainer Danny Kaye, and the Hall of Fame baseball player Lou Gehrig.
