Yorktown, New York
The Town of Yorktown, New York was settled in 1683 and incorporated in 1788. Yorktown is on the northern border of Westchester County, is approximately 40 square miles, and has a population of about 36,000. Yorktown is 38 miles north of midtown Manhattan.
The town was named after Yorktown, Virginia in honor of a Revolutionary war battle there on October 19, 1781.
The Croton River runs through the southern part of Yorktown. In 1842, NYC dammed the Croton River to provide a reliable source of drinking water.
There are numerous attractions in Yorktown, beginning with Teatown Reservation. Teatown is a nature preserve of 730 miles with 14 miles of hiking trails, and there are numerous events held throughout the year for adults and children alike providing a close up look at the variety of wildlife in the area. The Turkey Mountain Nature Preserve has 125 acres and magnificent summit views of the Croton Reservoir dam, Bear Mountain, the Hudson River and the New York City skyline.
The North County Trailway is a paved pedestrian bike path covering 22.1 miles from Eastview in Mt. Pleasant to Baldwin Place in the Town of Somers. Work is currently underway to construct a southern trailway from Mt. Pleasant 14 miles to the south. The Franklin D. Roosevelt State Park offers fishing, boating, a swimming pool which can accommodate hundreds of visitors if not thousands, and spacious picnic areas.
